To meet the UK Environment Agency’s inland bathing water quality standards, E. coli levels should be below 1,000 CFU per 100ml. “It would be terrific if the Boat Race drew attention to it. The cause was a hypertensive stroke, said his wife, Nancy Sharkey, a retired Times editor. The executive jet managed to land safely at a remote military airport, but the Gol Linhas Aéreas commercial airliner it collided with did not have such a fortunate fate: It nose-dived to the ground, killing all 154 people on board. It was the deadliest civilian aviation accident in Brazil at the time. The collision prompted inquiries by Brazil’s military and by American transportation safety investigators. Both placed blame on air traffic controllers but never fully resolved who was at fault or why the planes were flying at the same altitude.

A Drop in American Gun Violence
  + stars: | 2023-11-01 | by ( German Lopez | More About German Lopez | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The smaller thingsThe national conversation about gun violence focuses on big federal policy ideas. Activists and pundits often speak about the need for a federal law enacting universal background checks or banning assault weapons. “But the idea is these kinds of regulations accumulate.”After all, America’s gun problem is rooted in easy access to firearms. But when these problems turn violent, quick access to guns makes that violence much more likely to become lethal. Anything that adds barriers to picking up a firearm in such moments reduces deaths, whether it’s incremental state policies or broader federal laws.

My husband and I bought a house in 2020, and we decided to stick to a mortgage payment of $700. Here's how we decided on how large of a mortgage payment we could afford. Why we kept our numbers conservativeBased on the 28% rule, our income could have supported a much larger mortgage payment. In my opinion, opting for a smaller mortgage payment than we could technically afford opened up more room for financial flexibility. Since closing three years ago, our mortgage payment has grown to around $770 per month.

The platform, which Schwartz describes as "Etsy for software products," currently brings in roughly $354,000 per month, according to a CNBC Make It estimate. "You want to really orient yourself around a real problem that needs to be solved," Schwartz, 25, tells Make It. During high school, he and Zoub built sneaker bots, or pieces of software that nabbed limited-edition shoes faster than people who manually clicked "buy now." The company clearly solved a problem, but the co-founders didn't find the work creatively fulfilling. It solved a safety problem: Zoub patrolled online forums where people sold software, and found them rife with scammers and rip-off artists.

I was an NBC page two weeks laterIt was 1976 and I was 20, still in college and clueless. Now in its 90th year, the NBC Page program is one of the most prestigious entry-level positions in the entertainment industry. My other friend Al got his NBC page job when the women who worked behind the scenes on "Wheel of Fortune" spotted him as a contestant on the show. To Steven Schwartz, the side hustle was a necessity: He wanted rare Nike Kobe 7 Easter shoes, and his parents wouldn't pay for them. Now in their mid-20s, Schwartz and Zoub still work together, along with a third partner named Jack Sharkey. They're the co-founders of Whop, a tech marketplace that's like "Etsy for software products," Schwartz says. (Whop reviewed the estimate, but declined to offer specifics.) But Whop wasn't an overnight success.

The College Board said that its AP Psych course is "effectively banned" under Florida state law. A Florida law bans talk of sexuality and gender in school — key topics in AP Psych. Ron DeSantis' administration is using an "extremist agenda" to "censor" AP Psychology after the College Board said the course was "effectively banned" through the state's parental rights law critics have called "Don't Say Gay." But, under DeSantis' law, teachers are prohibited from discussing gender identity and sexual orientation in school. "This attempt to censor the AP Psychology course is just one more example of the governor's extremist agenda," Spar said.

Here's an exclusive look at the Notion document used by the startup during its fundraising process. Although fundraising in the creator economy has slowed over the last several quarters, Schwartz sees Whop as a pivot in the space. "Historically, the creator economy, at least up until maybe a year and a half ago, has been pictures and text content," Schwartz said. Instead of creating a fancy pitch deck to send off to investors, Whop's team built a deck using productivity software Notion. Check out the Notion document Whop used to raise its $17 million Series A:Note: The document Whop shared with Insider includes several redactions.

How to pay for graduate school

If you plan to attend graduate school, it's important to understand the costs up front. As a graduate student, relying on grants, scholarships, and fellowships is better than taking out loans to pay for school. As you gear up for graduate school, it's time to find grants, scholarships, and fellowships to cover the cost. Example comparing school costs with and without grant and scholarship aidPaying for graduate school is often not as simple as finding a single grant to cover the entire cost. Alternative ways to pay for grad schoolGrants and scholarships aren't the only way to pay for school.

Florida passed a bill protecting space companies in case of injury or death of a crew member. The bill comes as more billionaires are trying to make commercial space flight a reality. Passengers will have to sign a waiver stating they understand the risks of spaceflight before boarding a spaceship, the bill states. Jeff Sharkey, a lobbyist representing SpaceX, also stood in support of the bill at a March 26 hearing, per Florida Politics. Still, the bill doesn't abrogate space companies from all responsibility.

“Some have hypothesized that the rise in homicide rates is specifically a result of the June 2020 protests,” Chalfin and MacDonald wrote, but “theories about the role of the protests must contend with several challenges. The data also pinpoint the timing of the spikes to late May 2020, which corresponds with the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis and subsequent anti-police protests — protests that likely led to declines in law enforcement. Although unemployment caused by Covid surged in April, there was little if any increase in murders at that time. That is the challenge that every city should be grappling with. "It is never good for suppliers when (automakers) cut vehicle prices because that pressure rolls downhill," said Dan Sharkey, an attorney who represents suppliers to Tesla and other automakers. Tesla's cost-reduction efforts come after it aggressively cut vehicle prices last month, prompting U.S. rival Ford Motor Co (F.N) to follow suit. More price cuts could be painful in a sector where some suppliers are already struggling, industry officials said. Tesla could negotiate cost reductions with suppliers through "shared" efficiencies or by simply twisting the suppliers' arms and taking some of their profit away, a former Tesla executive told Reuters. "They will get a lot of pushback from suppliers to cut costs," said industry consultant Laurie Harbour, who works with suppliers.
Depending on the loan type, lenders can repossess collateral or get repayment through other options. In other words, failing to keep up your end of a loan agreement can eventually push your loan into default. So I started saving up money by getting paid for chores around the house and putting any birthday money in my piggy bank. I also learned a lesson about money that I've carried into my financial choices as an adult. Instead of following in the footsteps of my friends, I decided that it was better to make money decisions on my own. As a kid, this meant spending money on my own unique interests and hobbies. I learned early on not to base my spending decisions based on what everyone else is doing.
We are diversifying our income streams, maintaining a robust emergency fund, and keeping our pantry fully stocked. But beyond our regular jobs, we are looking for new ways to diversify our income streams. Maintaining a robust emergency fundA robust emergency fund has always been the cornerstone of my financial plans. But if all of our income streams dried up, I do know that we'd have some time to figure out our next move. Beyond taking a careful look at our holiday spending, we've started to look for other ways to cut down on our costs.
There are many exceptions that may require you to keep your tax records for longer. Within three years, you can amend your tax return in order to claim a credit or refund. If the IRS has questions about your tax returns or wants to perform an audit, you'll probably be asked to produce your tax records. But of course, it is absolutely not recommended that you skip tax filing or intentionally commit fraud on your tax return. The bottom lineThe IRS clearly outlines the guidelines around how long you should keep your tax records.
